T r a u m a a n d R e c o n s t r u c t i v e S u r g e r y Reconstructive and Trauma surgery is a medical specialty that is recognized in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria as an independent medical field with the aim of reconstructing the function of the body after traumatic events or diseases. It combines skills from plastic, orthopedic, general, vascular, thoracic, spine, and neurosurgery and often works in cooperation with other medical specialties. Emergency reconstructive surgery and non-emergency reconstructive surgery needs to be considered and differentiated (e.g. Open tibia fracture vs. a torn ligament in the knee). Since trauma and reconstructive surgery is a dedicated medical specialty, Germany offers some of the best reconstructive and trauma centers in the world. Medical tourism may not be suitable for real traumatic emergencies and we advise to use the local emergency response system. However, some non-emergency trauma or reconstructive cases may be very well suited for medical tourism.
