This new procedure for hip replacement is muscle sparing. Rather than exposing the joint through one large incision and muscle dissection, two smaller incisions and the use of xray visualization allow the surgeon to place the hip prosthesis. The procedure is relatively new, and with any new procedure there is debate if it really adds benefits. Proponents argue that the patient recovery time is shorter, there is less intra-operative blood loss, and post operative pain may be reduced. Those arguing against it, question precision and ask for long term clinical data. Both positions aside, it can be argued that the procedure requires more surgical skill and we consider it a procedure requiring an orthopedic expert.
