An infected hip implant requires immediate and radical treatment by an orthopedic infection specialist to remove and replace the infected hip in a staged process. During the first stage the surgeon removes the infected hip, any bone cement remnants, as well as damaged soft and bone tissue. A temporary implant eluding special antibiotics is place to stabilize the joint and further fight the infection. The patient is able to move and exercise with this implant. This approach is combined with additional oral or I.V. antibiotics for a longer period of time. When laboratory tests indicate that the infection has been eliminated successfully, a permanent revision hip implant is placed in a second surgery. There are a few other treatment options available also. Our surgeons will be happy to assist you in selecting what is best given your circumstances. This procedure requires an orthopedic specialist.
