There are two types of septal defects: ventricular and atrial septal defect.
The ventricular septal defect is a hole in the deviding wall between the left and right heart chamber. This is a very common inherited cardiac anomaly. If conservative treatment fails open heart surgery may be required.
Atrial septal defects are similar to ventricular septal defects except that the location within the heart is different. These defects are located between the atrium (the upper chambers of the heart) and permits blood flow between the left and the right atrium. Depending on the condition there are several ways to treat this pathology, either with open surgery or with a minimally invasive procedure.
Any established heart surgery department in a German hospital carries out these type of procedures.
